Last weekend I took my girls to see By the Seashore at Arts on the Horizon. It was super cute! If you have little ones ages 0-6, you should definitely check out their shows! “Arts on the Horizon values intelligent, innovative, and original work for diverse young audiences that is accessible, affordable, inspiring and fun.”
By the Seashore takes us on a magical journey to a place children love to visit – the beach! From birds and fish, to sand and water, and everything in-between, young audience members are invited to explore all the amazing things we find on the shore, in the ocean, and in the sky (with no need for wings or scuba gear!). Using an imaginative mix of puppetry, movement, and sound, this sensory-filled production is specifically designed for babies and young toddlers.
Even though this show is recommended for ages 0-2, my girls ages 4 & 6 really enjoyed it! Before the show started we checked out the all the fun stations set up in a separate room. There was a Beach Day photo station where the kids could try on leis and hold beach toys for a fun photo opp. A sensory station contained items of different textures like things you would find at the beach. My girls had fun in the sandcastle station where they built a castle out of blocks.
After we explored all the different stations it was time to go into the theater for the show. At the performances the children sit on the floor, right in front of the stage area. Parents can join them or sit in the row of chairs directly behind the floor seating.
There are three actors in the show and it is all non-verbal. The actors make noises and are accompanied by music and ocean sounds. The children love how the actors interact with them and let them feel the props throughout the show. We were very impressed with the props that are so creative and visually appealing to the little ones. There is a fish mobile, a sea turtle made out of a life preserver, and jellyfish made out of a beach balls with lights inside. Running time is 20 minutes, plus a 10-15 minute exploration time after the production where children can interact with the props used in the show and the performers (30-35 minutes total). The show is perfect for ages 0-2 but if you have older children, they will love it too!
There are just 3 shows remaining:
Friday, July 28th at 10:30am
Saturday, July 29th at 10:00am
Saturday, July 29th at 11:30am
Tickets: $6. Purchase tickets here.
Arts on the Horizon Presents By the Seashore + GIVEAWAY!
Arts on the Horizon is a theatre for children ages 0-6 years old in Northern Virginia. Their mission is to offer high-quality theatre for young children and their families at an affordable rate. Their shows are 30 minutes in length and are performed by professional actors. We attended one of their performances earlier this year and loved it. See my review here. The next show coming up is called By the Seashore and is recommended for ages 0-2.

Nutt and Bolt at Arts on the Horizon + GIVEAWAY!
Nutt and Bolt are robot rivals. They spend their days using the random junkyard objects around them (and on them!) in games of skill and sound, rallying their wee friends, the audience, for support. As the competition builds to a frenzied pinnacle, Nutt and Bolt realize that by working together, they can make something even more wonderful than they could on their own! Together, sounds become stories, notes become music, and the world becomes full of possibility.
Through props, costumes, and sets created entirely out of upcycled or recycled objects,Nutt and Bolt, reinforces a child’s transformative power of imagination and their own ability to make ordinary objects into something extraordinary.
Created and Directed by Matt Bassett. Best for children ages 2 – 6 and their families.

My daughters love to go see children’s shows so we’ve made the rounds at many theatre companies in the DC area but Arts on the Horizon in Alexandria, Virginia is one that I recently learned about:
Arts on the Horizon is a professional, non-profit theatre company with a unique and specific focus of providing performances and education programs for young people ages 0 to 6 years old. We were the first theatre company in the country to focus our work solely on this age range.
Arts on the Horizon values intelligent, innovative, and original work for diverse young audiences that is accessible, affordable, inspiring and fun. We believe that the arts play an important role in the life of a child. Our interactive, nonverbal shows are performed by professional, adult actors.
When I found out that their December production was “Adventures with Mr. Bear” I knew that my littlest would love it and she definitely did!
When we first arrived at the theatre we went to the “Adventure Prep” room and did some activities with Mae’s bear friend she brought along. They first tried on their adventure hats, then did some coloring, read a book, and had a tea party.
It was soon time to go into the theater for the show. The seating is mostly on the floor except for a few chairs along the back. The theatre is very small, so it’s nice cozy environment for the little ones. I thought the set was really well done: simple with bright colors and fun toys.
As we waited a few minutes for everyone to get seated, we listened to the live music and played a little game of “eye-spy” with things on the set to keep Mae occupied.
Then it was time for the show to start:
One cozy winter afternoon, a young girl and her favorite stuffed animal, Mr. Bear, play a game of hide and seek which evolves into a series of exciting adventures. Together, they embark on a journey of endless possibilities – all from the comfort of her playroom!
The show was about 30 minutes long and was completely non-verbal, just live music accompanying the talented acting. I thought that was so unique – we’ve never been to show like this one. I was surprised how attentive the children were with no words being spoken.
It is a really cute production and perfect for kids ages 2-5 years old. If you have the chance to go see a show, you should! I promise you won’t be disappointed! Many weekend shows have already sold out but there are still tickets available for several of the weekday performances. You can purchase tickets here.
